Honoring Women’s Impact in the Insurance Industry
Women have long held a substantial presence in our industry, with around 60% representation in the insurance workforce compared to the 46.8% across the broader US workforce. This March, we are celebrating Women’s History Month by highlighting some inspiration, success, and advice from women at Shepherd Insurance who have been instrumental in the organization. We are proud to have so many outstanding female professionals on our team and hope they inspire other women in the industry as much as they inspire us.
Challenges and Rewarding Opportunities:
Katie Collett, a Commercial Lines Account Manager in our Louisville, Kentucky, office, has worked in the insurance industry for over 15 years and has recently stepped up to help fill a much-needed role in our newly developed Small Business Department. “My most recent achievement was stepping out of my comfort zone, taking on a leadership role, and helping to lay the groundwork for our new Small Business Department,” says Katie. “This has been a challenging and rewarding opportunity. It has encouraged me to become more confident in myself and my capabilities as a leader/mentor.”
Sharing Success, Inspiring Others:
Sarasota, Florida, Sales Executive, Lindsey Epting, is a seasoned insurance industry veteran who grew up in a sales-oriented family and has used this to help her succeed. “I’ve been in the insurance industry for 20 years. Insurance is quite literally a passion for me; I guess some would say that I am an insurance “geek”! My love of insurance and sales came at a young age. I grew up in a sales-oriented family; my grandfather was a longtime life insurance specialist, and my father was Vice President at Tupperware. I have been fortunate to have many memorable moments in my career. Still, the nearest to my heart would be being awarded “Top 40 under 40” by the Florida Business Observer and entering the “Million Dollar Sales Club,” says Lindsey.
Aspiring Advice:
“Forge your own path regardless of your degree or position. Leadership isn’t about titles; it’s about embracing your strengths, learning continuously, and empowering others,” shares Brittany Nelson, Director of Population Health & Well-being. “Lead by example, communicate effectively, and stay adaptable to succeed. And finally, find a company whose culture allows you to do this freely (as Shepherd Insurance has done for me).” Brittany is from our Evansville, Indiana, office and brings a unique perspective to the insurance industry as a registered dietitian and certified health & well-being coach.
Exemplifying Excellence:
Mindy Myers, a Human Resources Manager out of our Carmel, Indiana office, has been at Shepherd for over 3 years but has been in the human resources field for over 25 years. “I enjoy the family culture Shepherd cultivates and the opportunity for growth that they encourage. I appreciate the professionalism of my co-workers and their ability to have fun together!” remarks Mindy. “This is truly a remarkable place to work and build a career.”
Creating Relationships:
“I’ve found that building genuine relationships with my clients is key. It’s not just about policies and premiums; it’s about understanding their needs, earning their trust, and being there for them every step of the way,” exclaims Sherry Rutherford, Personal Lines Account Manager. Sherry is out of our Richmond, Kentucky office and has been in the insurance industry for over 10 years where she has successfully built and maintained relationships with her clients over the years.
Leadership In Action:
Madelynne Berry is a Front Desk Coordinator in our Payson, Arizona office who draws her inspiration for a career in insurance from the women that came before her. “I was inspired to pursue a career in the insurance industry because of the strong women leaders who have always been around me. Seeing their success, particularly my Aunt Susan, is inspiring,” affirms Madelynne.
We are honored to spotlight the impact women have made here at Shepherd Insurance and in the insurance industry. Their stories serve as a reminder of the power of commitment, determination, and resilience. Women in the insurance industry have seen a 50% increase in leadership roles over the past decade, demonstrating their growing influence and expertise in the field. As we look ahead, the role of women at Shepherd Insurance will continue to be instrumental in exceeding client’s needs and providing solutions for what matters most.
